Stand Up sessions give your team a structured daily moment to surface open issues by category, track what's red, and end each meeting with a clear record of what was resolved. When Northwoods Outfitters started using the Operations board on their warehouse floor, Diego, the operations lead, found that running a 10-minute session each morning cut their incident-to-resolution time roughly in half — because every open item was visible every day.
Here's how to run one.
Before you start
The Rhythm module must be enabled and at least one board must exist before you can run a session. Most industries have Rhythm switched on during setup; if you don't see Rhythm → Stand Up in the sidebar, ask an admin to enable it in Settings → Modules. Anyone with the rhythm.boards.manage permission (owner, admin, advisor, and contributor by default) can create a board with New board — pick a tier and optionally the board it escalates to — and on an empty list an Apply a template button may offer a ready-made board for your industry.
Step 1: Open your board
Click Rhythm → Stand Up in the sidebar. You'll see a list of boards. Click the board you want to run the session on — for example, "Operations — Line 3".
The board detail page shows issues grouped into columns: Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost by default. Issues are ordered with red severity first, then yellow, then green.
Step 2: Check and add today's issues
Before starting the session, quickly scan the columns for anything missing. At the bottom of any column, type a title and choose a severity — green, yellow, or red — then press Enter or click +. Any contributor, advisor, admin, or owner can add issues at any time (viewers can see issues but not add them).
The Safety column shows a days since last incident counter based on open safety issues. Keep it in mind as you review.
Step 3: Start the session
When the team is gathered, click Start session on the board detail page. The session page opens and shows:
- All open (non-resolved) issues grouped by their column label.
- A Facilitator selector — pick the person leading today's discussion.
- A Session notes text area for anything the team wants to capture.
Click any issue to open the detail panel, where you can update the title, description, severity, and status, or resolve it directly.
Step 4: Work through the issues
Walk the columns in order. For each red or yellow issue, ask the owner for a quick update. From the detail panel you can:
- Change the status to in-progress when someone picks it up.
- Click Resolve to mark it done and stamp the resolved time.
- Click Escalate to [parent board] to push a persistent issue up to the next tier (visible only when the board has an escalation target).
- Click Escalate to problem to open a formal A3-style problem record in the Execution module, or Escalate to task to turn the issue into a task.
Escalation is one-way — once escalated, the button disappears and the issue on the parent board can be escalated further independently.
Step 5: Save notes and end the session
Type any meeting notes in the Session notes box and click Save notes. Notes can be cleared by saving an empty field on a future session.
Click End session to return to the board page. The session record is saved and appears in the session history. Once any stand-up session exists in the workspace, the Run your first stand-up item on the dashboard's Getting started card is marked done.
What comes next
If recurring issues keep appearing, consider escalating them to the Execution module for structured problem solving, or linking the board to a higher-tier escalation target. See How to configure KPI cells on a Stand Up board to add quantitative targets to each column.
